Koh Samui’s lesser known gay scene

Koh Samui is best known as a place to chill and take advantage of the island’s unparalleled nature: crystal clear seas and white sand beaches. But it’s also provides for gay visitors and locals with a friendly and laid-back gay scene. Whilst it may not be on the same scale as Bangkok or Pattaya, the more easygoing pace is likely to be a better fit for your island break.

For those who want a truly fabulous experience, you could consider staying at the ALPHA Gay Resort. Its pool plays host to fabulous men-only parties several times a week, and monthly LGBTF ‘everyone welcome’ events. Some of the events are clothing optional, so it’s easy to see why it’s a firm favorite.

Most of the bars of offer are congregated around Chaweng Beach. Pride Bar is a great starting point for newcomers to the island. It’s a relaxed café-cum-bar space with a roadside terrace that’s great for people-watching and getting your bearings. You’ll also find a host bar, K-Club, which tends to be a little pricier.

If you’re looking for something more low-key, The Road Less Travelled is a charming, gay-owned café serving delicious coffee, cake and cocktails in an antiquey living room atmosphere. You can also enjoy homecooked meals and chat to the friendly and welcoming staff.

Of course, you’ll feel welcome at any of the island’s nightlife spots, but Samui Mojito Lounge is a cosy, LGBT-friend space where you can enjoy a homemade cocktail whilst listening to chilled jazz. And if you’re in the mood for a dance, ARK bar is one of Samui’s most vibrant clubs and is frequented by party seekers of all persuasions.
